hi, I'm Shawna
Simmons- Whitty
My early days of photography began in the dark room in high school at age 13 near Washington, DC. The quiet room with soft music playing, the analog process of developing film, and the excitement of seeing your own black and white prints come to life had me hooked. I knew then that I wanted to be a professional photographer, with dreams of one day Art Directing fashion shoots. From there I pursued a degree in Visual Communications at The University of South Carolina (go Gamecocks!) and switched to digital to shoot for the school newspaper and creative magazine. I was always driven, competitive, and wanted to work with the best of the best. And to me that only meant one thing.
New york city was calling my name...
Thanks to a Craigslist post I landed an internship in 2009 with a big fashion photographer in NYC, and got thrown to the wolves from the minute I stepped foot into that studio. Within the first month I shot 32 runway shows at the iconic New York Fashion Week. I saw Anna Wintour in the flesh. I went backstage with models. I attended parties with celebrities I had only seen on TV...so I basically felt like I was living in the movie The Devil Wears Prada. I was madly in love with the glitz and the glam of the world of fashion. But I was missing something huge from my life that I loved just as much.
I grew up riding and showing in the Hunter circuit, and missed being in the saddle
Living on the island of Manhattan meant that my beloved years of riding had to be put on pause. By 2016 I was ready for a change and moved back home to the Washington, DC area. I set up a home base in Middleburg, VA and worked for a local fashion company there while getting back into riding and showing again. I bought a young mare named Giczelle and learned all about Hunter Breeding and raising your own baby horse.
I photographed black backgrounds on the weekends to help pay for my entry fees and pricey horse habit, and the business grew exponentially in a few short months. By 2017 I quit my corporate job to take SAS Equestrian full-time. I booked a one-way ticket down to Wellington to network...or in my mind the New York City of the horse world. And my business has been booming ever since.
How far I've come in just five years
Since launching this brand in 2017, I have shot over 15 magazine covers and have been published in France, Denmark, Canada, USA and Germany. I was the WEF Cover Artist in 2020 and I have won two national awards with the American Horse Publications. I have been interviewed by The Chronicle of the Horse, Sidelines Magazine and The Plaid Horse and have been featured on a podcast with The Amateur Hour. I have partnered with brands like Devoucoux + CWD, Hermes and MARS Equestrian.
I've had the privilege to shoot talented riders like Scott Stewart, Tori Colvin, Jennifer Gates, Georgina Bloomberg, Grace Debney, Norman Dello Joilo, Lucy Davis, Augusta Iwasaki, Meredith Beerbaum-Michaels, and Maddy & Hunt Tosh.
I've also...
Lived in Ubud, Bali for a month with a company called Unsettled to network with other like-minded entrepreneurs and learn what it means to rest and unplug.
Adopted the sweetest dog named Rhys from Danny & Ron's at WEF in 2020, and he was a lifesaver during quarantine. Not to mention the best travel buddy ever.
Drove cross-country in the middle of the pandemic to see the country and book photo shoots along the way. By a twist of fate I met my amazing husband, Matt, during my stop in Chicago through a mutual friend! We got engaged four months later and eloped just the two of us. In August 2022 we welcomed our beautiful baby boy and we are expecting baby # 2 in October 2023!
